Professor Stephen Twigg, MBBS (Hons-I), PhD, FRACP, is Head of the Dept of Endocrinology and the Endocrinology Research Laboratories, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney, and Kellion Professor of Endocrinology, Stan Clark Chair in Diabetes, Sydney Medical School, the University of Sydney. As an endocrinologist-scientist and educationalist his program of research since 1995 has been dedicated to preventing, detecting, and managing end-organ complications in diabetes, including diabetic cardiomyopathy, liver disease and diabetes, diabetic nephropathy and diabetic foot disease, as well as acute complications including hypoglycaemia. Steve’s main translational interest is how diabetes causes tissue damage with loss of function, and ways this can be addressed to improve clinical outcomes. He delivers the primary medical support at the IDF-WPR recognised multidisciplinary Diabetes High Risk Foot Clinic at the RPAH Diabetes Centre, Sydney, Australia. Diabetes foot care and the wound microenvironment is a main focus, as is tissue fibrosis caused by growth factors in diabetes such as NASH. He has experience undertaking clinical trials in type 1 and type 2 diabetes as a site investigator. He is a past President of the Australian Diabetes Society, publishes in peer-reviewed journals on clinical and basic research into diabetes and its complications and has contributed to national clinical care guidelines in type 1 and type 2 diabetes. He was the Co-chair of the ADS NDSS Driving and Diabetes working party in 2011-12 and ADS representative on the Nat. Roads Driving and Diabetes working party in 2015.
